Our History – Taking a Walk Down Memory Lane
We all know that poverty exists – but how does it affect the world?
Our journey started with this simple question. We had all taken note of the world’s changing economy and social scope and how more people were being plunged below the poverty line, and we wanted to understand what this meant for those affected. Armed with open minds and the zeal to get to the root causes of the growing numbers, we delved into research, collaborated with community project leaders and researchers, and interacted with people who were classified as poor in their countries.
Our work brought out a glaring problem. Poverty was a widespread problem that was often exacerbated by systemic problems. What’s more, it did not just affect one person but instead created a downward chain that affected the people close to those who were poor. This effect would eventually make its way to the economy and society, barring people from accessing adequate healthcare, good education, justice, and many other human and social needs.
Give a man a fish; he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish; he eats for a lifetime.
Witnessing the struggles faced by poor communities, one thing was clear – caring was not enough to help them. We could no longer stand aside and hope that things would get better. While we could not undo the systemic problems in one go, we knew two things. One was that every human being could play a role in making the world a better place for all. It did not matter who they were and what resources they had – everyone could give something to benefit society. Second was that we could not offer band-aid solutions to affected communities as these had proven only to work in the short term. We needed practical and sustainable solutions that could address the poverty crisis before it became worse.
With this in mind, we came together and vowed to inspire others to take up this cause. But how?
- Information is power – We knew that existing solutions were not doing enough to alleviate the solution. We sat down with experts and researched the roles that each person could play to foster meaningful change in society. Nobody is too limited to be part of this change.
- A problem shared is a problem solved – Knowing what people could do would be for naught if we did not share the facts with the world. By spreading knowledge about the intertwining of poverty and other social ills, we believe we can empower more people to play a part in changing our society.
